| The non-wearing of seat belts is a particularly dangerous road user behaviour, which has been recognised internationally as a key contributory factor in road traffic collisions and injury severity (WHO, 2018). Research conducted by the RSA found that 22% of car users killed between 2019-2023 were not wearing a seat belt & that 7% seriously injured were not wearing a seat belt at the time of collision. Facts from the August Bank Holiday Weekend 2024 – 3 Lives tragically lost. 12 Serious life threatening Injuries . 180 arrested for driving under the influence. 294 for Mobile Phone use. 3,886 Drivers detected for speeding offences. 106 for not wearing seatbelts. 450 Vehicles seized for no tax & insurance. 174 Unaccompanied learner drivers. These figures were significantly up on the previous Bank Holiday Weekend. If you or someone in your car chooses not to wear a seat belt they become a hazard to everyone else in the car. Lets all work together to make the October Bank Holiday period safer for all road users.
